This tour option from Juliaca to Amantani Island will work smoothly even if you arrive until 2:30 pm.

But if your flight is scheduled in the late afternoon (after 2:30 pm) then we would suggest you to spend the night at local typical Chifron lodges such as Quillapata lodge or Inti Wasi lodge.

The next day, early in the morning after breakfast, we'd head toward Amantani island by a private local boat to join the Amantani Homestay Tour boat that came from Puno the day before with other participants. This navigation will take 1 hour. 

Chifron lodges offer unique views to Lake Titicaca and the cultural exchange with the locals would be once in a life experience as well.

Day 1: Juliaca to Chifron/Amantani & overnight.

On this tour we are going to pick you up from Juliaca airport and then drive to Chifron by a private vehicle (for the route see the blue line on the map above).

Chifron is the closest local port to Amantani Island. It's located 1h 15min away from the airport and 1 hour from Amantani Island by a regular slow motor boat.

In order to gain time and avoid the extra time driving from Juliaca to Puno, we propose to go directly from Juliaca to Chifron by a private van. You may have to take/book this option if your plane lands between 9:30 am and 2:30pm approx.

Some adventurous people would think they can get easily from Juliaca to Amantani Island by themselves then here is the HOW:

Take a taxi from the airport to Chifron colectivo station (terminal salida a Coata Capachica, 20 minutes away) and from here wait for other local passengers and leave for Capachica (1 hour). On arrival to Capachica take another taxi to Chifron (15 min). Finally onboard the colectivo motor boat to navigate to Amantani (available until 4pm). After 1 hour of navigation you arrive to Pueblo port at Amantani.

But you want to have a nice experience, let us do the job!

Our driver will do the transfer and you'll be sorted by someone of the Andean Ways team for 2 days, until the trip lasts. You won't have to travel alone, always accompanied by our English speaking staff.

The picture shows where we have to take the "lancha colectivo"to go to Amantani.

After that drive we arrive to Chifron the local pier. From here there are several colectivos to Amantani island, some days we have to wait for a while (boat tickets are included in the price).

Bear in mind: when we arrive to the pier, we might have to wait around, especially if there aren't local passengers or colectivo boats. Those local passengers who need to travel standby without previous reservation and this may encounter delays.

We just have to wait for the minimum number of people required on the boat.

Then after 1 hour of navigation across the beautiful lake landscape, enjoying the surrounding hills and mountains in the horizon, we arrive to Amantani Island.

On arrival we have to walk up to the host family's house. The Island is divided in 10 communities and they have a particular rotating system for hosting tourist (we'll let you know via email or WhatsApp where is the community host turn, after confirming the tour and when time comes) 

At the family house there is only basic facilities, so you may want to book in advance an upgraded family house (lodge).

After almost 3 hours from Juliaca to Amantani island, we will be comfortably resting in the local house. Enough time to explore the island.

At middle day you'll be served a local dish prepared with local ingredients (if your flight arrival is until 9:30 am). Quinoa soup, fried cheese with potato and oca, and muña tea (the Andean mint hot drink, ideal for altitude sickness as well).

Enjoy a stunning Amantani sunset.

In the late afternoon we'll start the hiking to the temple of Pachatata or Pachamama for seeing the Titicaca Sunset over the majestic Capachica peninsula peak.

At 5:45 pm we'll be back at home. It's a good time to talk to the family enjoying a nice cultural exchange experience.

Have dinner and rest for the next day.

Day 2: Amantani to Taquile to Puno

Early breakfast and walk down to the shared tourist boat.

At the pier is waiting for us another motor boat (the one that came from Puno the day before, we couldn't take this one because of lack of time and late plane landing).

Amantani to Taquile Island

We'll take this boat. A main English-Spanish speaking tour guide will lead the group to the next island.

Taquile is a 5.5 km long island, keeper of a fine traditional art textile.

From Amantani to Taquile island will be reached in 1 hour approximately.

While navigating the tour guide will provide the information for surviving on the island (just kidding, he'll inform about the hiking time, where to have lunch, what to do, etc.).

Taquile is very well known for its traditional art textile.

After a brief exploration at its main ";plaza de armas" to the art museum we'll have to go to the local tourist restaurant for lunch.

Here at the restaurant your group guide and a local man are going to perform how the natural shampoo is obtained out of plants. Some particular cloth wearing differences is explained by your guide. How a single or married man can be recognized because of the color and shape of his cloths.

After almost 3 hours on Taquile we'll take the boat to navigate to Puno (3 hours, 34 km).

On arrival you'll be picked up and then transferred to your hotel or any other place in downtown.

2. Juliaca to Amantani (private land transfer to Chifron & private boat to Amantani)

Pretty similar as the first option with the only difference that we are going to take a private local boat from Chifron to Amantani Island. Here we'll save some precious time not waiting for the boat (colectivo).

Day 1: Juliaca airport to Amantani Island

According to your flight number our driver and the guide will pick you up and drive you to Chifron local port (1h 15 min). Upon arrival, board a private local boat to traverse the Lake until Pueblo port at Amantani Island (1 hour).

We are going to arrive to Amantani at middle day or after. Here you'll meet the family, your host. They invite us to their typical houses to have lunch and stay the night.

After lunch, in the late afternoon we are hiking to its summit (Pachamama or Pachatata temple).

Later, back at home, dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Amantani to Taquile Island.

Amantani is a welcoming island, its people are always glad to shake hands with travelers, it's for sure you are going to get a glimpse of their way of life in these two days on the Lake.

With this magnificent experience we are leaving for Taquile, another unique and authentic place on the highest navigable Lake.

Taquile Island is well known for its art textile and beautiful landscape. Taquile is a little bit different from Amantani. Here, you would easily know who is married and who is single just looking at their clothing, hats and typical weaved belts or women's skirts.

You'll get to this very traditional island after one hour of navigation. Your guide before arrival, he explains about what we all are going to do once the boat reaches its shore.

One hour hike to the higher part; walk around on the plaza to see their handmade knitting and weavings which can be easily purchased directly from the locals. 

Go to the restaurant for lunching, meanwhile listen to the guide's explanation about Taquile's authorities, customs, art textile and overall how a local shampoo is made just using herbs.

Now, we have to walk to another section of the island to take the boat to back to Puno. Some 3 hours navigating across the open lake to arrive to Puno port.

Take into consideration that you won't stop at Uros islands for a guided group tour, however there is the option to spend the night at the Uros family's lodges reed made and fashioned rooms and meals.

It's about 2:45 pm when we arrive to Uros.

On arrival or next day learn much more about the ancestral way to build floating islands. Book in advance with the families and then they will come to pick you up by their boats.

Ride on a reed boat and learn about how they obtain the reeds and what part of this plant makes the island float.

Day 3: Uros to Puno

3. Juliaca to Uros (private Juliaca to Puno land transfer & private small engine boat to Uros)

Price: $98.00 USD per person (min 2 people)

This option works smoothly if your plane lands at 7:30 am (not after).

The regular Isla Amantani homestay tour starts at 7:45 am and the boat leaves from Puno port for Uros Islands at about 8:20 am.

Your plane is supposed to be landing at 7:30 am but while you pick up your luggage and take the vehicle, or if we are trapped in the transit traffic in Juliaca city and with some good luck we would arrive at 8:45 am, but just too late to board the motor boat from Puno port.

So this tour option has been designed precisely because of this issue.

A brief description of the Juliaca to Uros private transfer 

We are going to pick you up by a private vehicle from the airport and then drive to Puno (1h 10min) for catching up the shared tourist boat in Uros Reed Island.

At any cost, we are going to join Isla Amantani Homestay Tour at Uros reed floating islands.

Instead of going to the main Puno port we go to the local pier of the Uros islanders 10 to 15 min extra drive out from Puno city (but in our case we go directly from Juliaca).

A local Uros boat man will take us to the reed islands in just 10 minutes approx.

On arrival there will be a small engine boat waiting for us to go to Uros reed islands (only 10 to 15 min while the big boat takes 30 min from Puno port).

So this would mean we'll take the boat for Amantani just on time and also we'll be able to pay attention to the tour guide's explanation about the reed islands building process.

From this part of the tour the Isla Amantani homestay excursion keeps going as it is described.

You then go to Amantani, have lunch, hiking up to Pachamama or Pachatata temples for the Amantani Sunset, dinner and spend the night in local family house.
