Puno to Desaguadero

Peru to Bolivia Border Crossing

9:45 AM estimated arrival time at the Peruvian Desaguadero immigration office where you’ll meet your Bolivian tour guide, your driver introduces you to him and he’ll walk you through the process. So your border crossing between Peru and Bolivia will be quick and hassle-free if not crowded (especially on Tuesdays, Fridays, and local holidays).

When you arrive in the town of Desaguadero, you’ll get off the private vehicle, and grab your entire luggage. You have to switch vehicles to drive in Bolivia.

Therefore, be well prepared, have your documents and all required paperwork in order (if your nationality requires Tourist Visa).

Your guide will tell you to exchange your money at the exchange house in front of the Peruvian migration building. 

Getting Stamped Out of Peru

At the Peruvian migration office, you’ll need your passport and the Tourist Visa (if required) and wait in line along the side of the building and they’ll let people in one by one.

When everyone got the exit stamp, you’ll walk a short distance You’ll cross over a bridge in the middle of the town, a border crossing on the Bolivia side, and are greeted by lots of hustle and bustle.

Here, you must take the left street and again go to a small office located on your right.

Always check up-to-date requirements for your country. For example, if you are from United States, you will need a visa to enter Bolivia (most of the countries do not).

Border crossing process can last from 15 min to 60 min depending on if your nationality requires applying for the Tourist Visa or if it is market days (Tuesday or Friday).

After you got your entry stamp for Bolivia you’ll board a different mobility.

Desaguadero to Tiwanaku

11:45 AM (Bolivian time) your new friendly Bolivian driver (Juan Carlos, Abel, Saul or Julio), after you all had your stamps, is taking you to Taypi Uta Restaurant or another similar restaurant at Tiwanaku.

You’ll make the 45-minute drive to the archaeological site of Tiwanaku. You’ll stop for a few hours here, allowing you to take the 2-hour tour of Puma Punku escorted with your private Bolivian English speaking tour guide.

Tiwanaku Guided Tour

12:30 PM estimated arrival time at the Tiwanaku restaurant for a well-deserved lunch.

Then after, you’ll be led through the Akapana pyramid, sunken temple, Kalasasaya temple, the imposing Door of the Sun and museums and overall Puma Punku.

Following that, you might continue with shopping opportunities at a local market.
