What You’ll Do
The trip begins with a quick pick-up at your hotel in Ollantaytambo by your private vehicle and a direct scenic drive through diverse landscapes from lush greenery to rugged mountainous terrain.
Followed by a moderately challenging hike that will reward you with stunning panoramic views and the serene atmosphere and striking contrast between the Lake’s vibrant color and the surrounding peaks make this a must-see destination. Following that you’ll have lunch and driven back to Ollantaytambo.
Your Tour Itinerary
5:00 am – Ollantaytambo to Soraypampa
Early in the morning, you’ll be picked up at your hotel in Ollantaytambo for the journey to Humantay Lake.
Your day adventure starts with a 3-hour 20-minute direct drive to Soraypampa, located at 3,850 meters above sea level.
Upon arrival, get ready for the trek ahead. You’ll be hiking across rocky and uneven terrain, so using a walking stick is a great idea. We highly recommend you to take it easy. Take your time, walk slowly, rest, and drink plenty of water as you’ll be at a high altitude.
8:30 am – Soraypampa up to Humantay Lake
The hiking starts from Soraypampa up to Humantay Lake, surrounded by stunning scenery. You’ll witness the majestic, snow-covered peaks of Salkantay and Humantay Mountain. You’ll feel the powerful presence of these glaciers.
The trek to the lake takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. The trail starts off flat for around 20 minutes, but then continues uphill for the remainder of the hike until you reach the lake, which sits at 4,200 meters.
After the effort hiking uphill, you’ll enjoy the most incredible reward. The stunning Humantay Lake will gradually unveil itself before you. This beautiful turquoise lake is nestled within a rocky terrain that originates from the melting snow that blankets the Humantay glacier.
At the place, there will be plenty of time to take photos, offer a tribute to the Apus, and enjoy your free time. If you take a walk around the lake or push a bit to climb higher up the rocky slopes, you’ll gain even better views. The higher you are, the more turquoise the water will look, and you’ll be able to take in the ultimate panoramic sights.
12:00 pm – Lunch in the High Andes
Afterward, you will descend back to Soraypampa, which takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and it’s much easier than the ascent.
Upon returning, you will have lunch, and then head back to Ollantaytambo, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel (drop-off in Cusco is available under previous request).
