What You’ll Do

La Paz to Desaguadero

You’ll be picked up at your hotel in La Paz and transferred to Tiwanaku site for a guide tour and well-deserved lunch on the way to Desaguadero border.

Desaguadero to Puno

At the Bolivia Peru immigration offices you’ll be assisted by your Bolivian guide and introduced to your new Peruvian driver. Then after, you’ll be driven to Puno city with an optional photo stop along the way.

Your Tour Itinerary

7:30 AM – La Paz to Tiwanaku

Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel in La Paz and depart towards Tiwanaku archaeological site going through El Alto town, popular by its traffic jam and crowded streets. You’ll see spectacular scenery as you go through a series of interesting villages of the Bolivian Andean plains.

Hotels located in Zona Sur Calacoto (Mitru Express, Atix, etc) demands a 20-30 min extra drive from Main Square due its further location. If you’d like to skip car traffic in El Alto it is highly recommended to leave at 7:00 am. 

9:30 PM – Tiwanaku Guided Tour

Estimated arrival time at the Tiwanaku site for the guided tour of its most amazing attractions: the Akapana pyramid, sunken temple, Kalasasaya temple, the imposing Sun gate, lithic and ceramic museums and Puma Punku.

Your friendly and knowledgeable tour guide will have you well informed about its history and some curious fats.

This tour ends with a last exploring of Puma Punku ruins, on the way to Desaguadero border. Following that, you might continue with shopping opportunities at the local souvenir market.

12:00 PM at a local tourist restaurant, you’ll have a well-deserved and tasty lunch before continuing your journey to Puno. The set menu is based on a soup, Chicken, Trout or Llama meat with rice and vegetables as the main course. Cold, hot and alcoholic drinks are available at extra cost.

1:00 PM estimated departure time from Tiwanaku to Desaguadero borderline on paved road accompanied by your guide.

On arrival at the border, your guide will walk you throughout the Bolivian and Peruvian immigration offices.

The border crossing normally takes from 30 minutes up to 60 minutes depending if the place is crowded or if it is a market day (Tuesday and Friday).

Your guide walks you towards the Peruvian immigration offices through the small bridge where you’ll meet your Peruvian driver. You’ll walk a short distance, cross over a bridge in the middle of the town, a border crossing on the Bolivia side, and are greeted by lots of hustle and bustle. He will introduce you to your new Peruvian driver. By the other hand there is chance to exchange Bolivian pesos into Peruvian soles at the exchange house in front of the Peruvian migration building.

Getting Entry Stamp

11:45 AM (Bolivian time) your new friendly Bolivian driver (Juan Carlos, Abel, Saul or Omar), after you all had your stamps, is taking you to Taypi Uta Restaurant or another similar restaurant at Tiwanaku.

After you got your entry stamp for Bolivia you’ll board a different mobility.

Desaguadero to Puno

1:00 PM (Peruvian time while in Bolivia is 2:00 pm) it’s the estimated time to leave Desaguadero borderline for Puno city on a 2 hour 30 minute car ride, along the way If you’d like to stop for leg stretching or picture then just ask your driver.

Pomata Lookout

Besides the main paved road, a lovely place to spend 2 up to 5 minutes for a great picture over the world’s highest navigable Lake backed by the snowcapped peaks of Bolivia’s Cordillera Real range.

It offers a panoramic view of the vastness of the Lake and stunning view of the birthplace of the Incas, the Island of the Sun in Bolivia.

Then after, you’ll keep driving on a non-stop ride to Puno city.
