What You’ll Do
Quick pick-up at your hotel in Cusco by your guide and driver then head to explore Cusco’s peakest Mountain.
You’ll hike up though a dusty trail up to the summit and gain incredible views on arrival at the top. Later return to the restaurant and come back to Cusco.
Your Tour Itinerary
6:00 am – Cusco to Rainbow Mountain
You will be collected at your hotel by our driver and guuide then comfortably ride towards the Rainbow Mountain car parking on a 3 hour drive. The seats are very comfortable. The drive can be a bit bumpy at times.
You will eventually come to your senses and realize that your about to climb Rainbow Mountain and hopefully by now you’ll be feeling fresh and ready to go. You’ll begin the trek accompanied with your private guide.
You might take the first break after just fifteen minutes. You won’t believe you are only fifteen minutes in. It does flatten out and the next forty-five minutes will be a much more enjoyable walk. If you still have difficulties or just don’t feel like walking, one thing to know is that there are horses available for rental along the path.
You will be really beginning to enjoy this hike. The most amazing thing about hiking Vinicunca (Quechua name for Rainbow Mountain) is the variety of landscapes you witness while walking up. Your eyes are surrounded with a panoramic scene of intense colors. Stone walls stretch across different angles along the rocky terrain and fluffy alpacas might be running around. It is beautiful sight.
At this point the hike will become quite difficult and you will realize that altitude sickness is not a myth. Bring Coca leaves and/or Oxishot portable oxygen. These will really help. You will have access to oxygen tanks on the car.
11:00 pm – Reaching the Top
You’ll be reaching the summit of Vinicunca and you now have time to hang out and get loads of photos.
When you make it to the summit of Vinicunca, the scenery is really something to behold. The maroon soil is topped with rainbow tips which gives you a euphoric feeling as if you are on another planet.
The most incredible mountain range meets the Ausangate glacier which gives an insane contrast of landscapes that is truly mesmerizing. You will have to walk so far to get there, you’ll feel that it made it that much sweeter when you reach the top. All the strenuous activity you’ll put your bodies through to get there was instantly worth it. Seeing Rainbow Mountain is an unforgettable experience. You’ll get to the summit at the time other people will start descending. You’ll get plenty of time to enjoy the view and take some pics/selfies.
12:00 pm – Red Valley Hiking
The climb down Vinicunca is much easier and it flys by. There will be still adrenaline flowing through your blood from the euphoric buzz of the summit. This hike will truly surprise you. I was taken aback by the whole adventure.
You will use this time to head to the Red Valley. It’s another 01 hour hiking up that will be added onto this tour and what a great decision it will be. Unlike Rainbow Mountain that is multicolored, Red Valley is known for its intense red color.
2:30 pm – Lunch
Stop for lunch. It will be a perfect reward after taking on the Rainbow Mountain.
7:00 pm – 7:30 pm – Arrive in Cusco
You’ll arrive back into Cusco. After a jam-packed day, you’ll be happily surprised to be back so early! This will give you time to have a nap.
