CUSCO TO PUNO SIGHTSEEING STOPS
The private transfer from Cusco to Puno route offers unique opportunities to make stops alongside the main highway such as at Andahuaylillas, Raqchi, Sicuani (lunch place), La Raya and Pucara for a self-guided visit and exploration (entry tickets can be purchased at each site).
If you’d like to stop off along the route, just let us know at the moment of booking then we’ll advise your driver to stop at the requested places then your total travel time would be more than 9 hours.
Andahuaylillas,
the San Pedro Apostol church known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes” was built by Jesuits in the sixteenth century over a pre-Columbian Huaca, or ceremonial space. It’s very popular because every inch of wall is covered with decoration. You’ll see large paintings framed in gold leaf lined the nave, while murals cover the remaining wall space.
Raqchi,
it is an Inca archaeological site known as the Temple of Wiracocha. It is close to the town of Raqchi and the Vilcanota River. It’s thought to be the tallest Inca structure ever built. Qullqas (Colcas) were widely used during the Incan times. Crops were stored in thatched and conical-roofed storehouses Qullqas. Two tiny windows give ventilation and a narrow door provides access to these circular, 26 feet in diameter, granaries.
Sicuani,
featured as the best place for lunch where a buffet restaurant that caters to tourists is set up. There is a nice selection of food. By the way the Urubamba River is born here and it follows through an outstanding route to the north of Peru, passing several types of terrains and vegetation. The river was of great importance in the Inca Empire and previous cultures.
La Raya
at 4,335 m, it’s the highest point in your journey after the lunch. The place also marks the division between the departments of Puno and Cusco. The best spot to enjoy the majestic view of the Mountains (snowy peaks of Apu Chimboya) and take pictures. You’ll find a small market that is set up at the stop selling typical Peruvian wares such as sweaters, hats, scarves and decorative rugs.
Pucara,
it will be your last stop before Puno, the town is famous for its talented ceramists, who craft the “Toritos de Pucara” (“Little Bulls of Pucara”) which can often be found adorning rooftops in houses in Peru, placed to attract good fortune at home.
At the Pucara Stone Museum (Museo Litico de Pucara) there are some amazingly intact pieces of stonework and pottery that were from pre-Inca times. The source of the pieces is the archaeological complex Pucara found further up the road from the museum, overhanging the village.

Your Peruvian driver will introduce you to your new Bolivian driver, who is waiting for you in front of the immigration office.
If you’re not going to come back to Peru then you can exchange your Peruvian currency into Bolivian pesos.
